Where We Belong

We were approached by the marketing team at Burnley Football Club with the idea that they wanted to produce a piece of work that celebrated fans being allowed back in to the stadium after such a long period of time away during the pandemic. They’re one requirement was that they wanted it to be ‘unique’. After a few phone calls and zoom chats we settled on the idea of producing a fully animated short film.

The film combines traditional, hand drawn 2d characters animated frame by frame, with a 3d world. The decision to create the environments and sets in a 3d world allowed us the freedom to move the digital camera anywhere within a scene - this meant we could rapidly prototype new shots, whilst also giving us the option of changing camera angles later in the film if we found it necessary. However, we wanted the film to maintain a nostalgic, child-like quality; hence the traditionally hand drawn 2d characters! We also wanted to ‘bridge’ the gap between the 2 different styles, and decided to bring a ‘hand-drawn’ quality to the 3d environments - we did this by creating painterly textures, and adding outlines to every object in the scene.

The film can be watched below, and a short ‘making-of’ film can be found at the bottom of the page if you’re curious to know more about the approach we took in making ‘Where We Belong’ for Burnley FC!

The Story

Our film tells the story of a young girl and her ‘Bertie’ teddy’s (the mascot of Burnley FC!) anticipation of their beloved Turf Moor stadium opening up for the first game of the new season. It’s been months since they’ve last been able to step foot into Turf Moor, and their excitement grows as the big day approaches!

The Music

We were lucky enough to work with an unbelievably talented team of composers and musicians. The film features an original score by Sylvia Navarro for Bleeding Fingers Music, the collective co-founded by Oscar-winning film score composer, Hans Zimmer.
